- The goal of this site is to compile an atlas of images of all pre-1900 buildings"of architectural significance" in England. Among its resources is an "Advisory" page on locked and unlocked churches, by county, with a county map showing church locations. Excellent for anyone interested in visiting historic churches. (The emphasis seems to be on ecclesiastical buildings.)

Some counties include links to town and parish councils, which is a great way to get information about individual towns and villages. County Council links will often (but not always) take you to a page that will have leisure/tourism section. Where available, check the "[county name] Out and About" link, as this will lead you to a page with links to different towns and villages within the county. Note, however, that the "What's On" link is no longer active.
